Humankind has always been afraid of the evil found within. Throughout time, the species has tried to rationalize why exactly they feel vices such as hatred, envy, greed, and lust; why they feel the need to put their own needs over the needs of the less fortunate when it is incorrect to do so. Ancient polytheistic religions attributed the darkness of man to the works of otherworldly, ethereal beings who work in mysterious ways. The Jewish, and subsequently Catholic, religion believed that the vice of man was the work of the demons that surround them, trying to tempt them to commit the most heinous acts so that they may claim their souls. The Jewish demonic pantheon stretches far and wide, with the names of numerous demons appearing in the sacred texts of The Holy Bible .
